The second reason is there will be questions that come up which need your complete attention to understand. Things that I found challenging include visualizations, understanding that the images you see in your mind are not the same thing as what you see with your eyes.
That one area has an enormous amount of information and what I finally found that helped was to learn to use the words to describe something.
When you are instructed to see an apple, you want to think inside your mind that it’s red, it has a core, it’s covered by a waxy slick surface, that it may have a stem or a couple of leaves.
This will allow you to see the image as you rotate it around and cover every angle. This comes as you are increasing your self-awareness, awareness, and getting comfortable observing things with your senses.
A third thing is about what you do with your body, how you sit, lay, or walk. Which is best or will it matter? For me it’s been about comfort, I want to be aware of my body and all its parts.
But not have to be obsessed with any one of the parts themselves. Like I don’t want to sit in a way that will put my foot to sleep, or a position that puts too much weight on an area so that it’s distracting in any way.
Figure out what works best for you and don’t be afraid to switch it up either.
The fourth area that comes up is what to do when you become aware of thoughts, aware of noises, awareness about any feelings you have.
I have had experiences where I had to let my breath catch up and it felt like I was almost within the reach of a panic attack. Here is the thing though, all of these are normal and it’s just about getting used to meditating.
You have to figure out the best way for you to do it. Sometimes you will have a busy mind and it’s even got a name called Monkey mind.
That just means you let it run its course trying to observe each thought and reminding yourself to breathe to attempt to refocus yourself.
Ten minutes of monkey mind followed by 20 minutes of silence isn’t uncommon. That is another thing that comes up, time.
The fifth reason to get comfortable is knowing how long you will even be capable of meditating. There is no wrong way to do it but the suggestion I see a lot is trying to add time as you gain experience.
This one can be tricky because what if you don’t have any time at all to keep adding. You barely have enough time to sit down and try to relax.
